There is a certain threshold for graphics, that once achieved, then its all good, and even when it improved more over time, its nice, but really not that big a deal at all for me. I dunno? I cannot stand pixelation, i refused to ever play games with it, but most of the good 90's games pretty much got on top of that problem. Personally, I would choose an average game with modern graphics than a good one with outdated graphics from a different era. If players' graphic expectations remained unchanged from back then, we would still see the same old ones today but we don't because technology evolves and people embrace it. Retaining good mechanics that work isn't the same as implementing modern graphics.
It is not surprising/inappropriate for players' expectations to have risen today than they did 20 years ago.
Concepts like major online revamps after launch didn't exist back then. That said, those with good mechanics for their time were highly rated by the standards of the day imo. An expansion called Alien Crossfire was released for Alpha Centauri. against the other factions, with or without Planets help. Choose one of seven factions to play, and struggle for control.
